Sicily continues to captivate the world from its ancient Hellenic ruins and intricate gold leaf mosaics to its cliff-top towns full of baroque cathedrals and picturesque beaches. The natural beauty of this volcanic island spans from turquoise coves, expansive saltpans, and tiered vineyards to pomegranate and persimmon trees, olive groves, and flowering yucca.
 
The sea monsters and nymphs that live on through Greek mythology were inspired here in Sicily. Influences from the Romans, Arabs, Normans, and Spanish contribute to the island's distinctive cuisine, architecture, and dialect.
 
Sicily is the birthplace of cannoli and a staple in most local households. Another Sicilian staple is Pasta alla Norma, a creamy dish made with fresh tomatoes, basil, garlic, eggplant, and sweet ricotta. Each meal is typically paired with one of the wines the island produces—more than 65 varieties. One of the most familiar is Marsala, a sweet fortified dessert wine, that is also used to create rich, complex sauces.
