Just Back: South Africa Family Safari

By Michael Abrahams

My siblings and mother came together for an epic two-week traverse around South Africa to check in away from life’s hustle & bustle, reconnect, and break bread. Across two safari camps, Cape Town, and the Winelands, we had properties virtually to ourselves.

Starting in the famed Sabi Sands, wildlife was abundant, breakfasts in the bush were remote and tranquil, villas were designed to be enjoyed in the heat of the day with cold plunge pools, and service was unparalleled.  Watching the raw beauty of nature and its cycles of life made me appreciate family on a deeper level.

We then drank, ate, and explored our way through the magic that is Cape Town, including iconic restaurants such as La Colombe where food is theatre and you’re there to enjoy the show; Luke Dale Robert’s more low-key, Asian fusion tapas style, Pot Luck Club; and his newly reincarnated Test Kitchen, now Fledgelings, whose unique concept centers around educating youth in the art of cooking while maintaining creative and high-quality menus.

We concluded in the picturesque Winelands during Franshhoek’s art weekend, with galleries bustling and patrons sipping. The magic of the Winelands unwound tension, recharged batteries, and just let time pass by ...  With vows to maintain our new sense of closeness, we said “Until next time”.
