South Africa: Nature’s Mind + Body Cure

By Kimberly Williamson

As a Journey Destination Specialist at TS, my trip to southern Africa was designed to expand my firsthand knowledge and forge local relationships. It ended up revolutionizing how I think about physical and mental wellness.

As a person with Celiac disease and myriad gut issues, who requires a gluten-free diet and a plethora of supplements, dining out can prove stressful. I also eat vegan at times and always prioritize healthy, clean eating. I packed protein bars to enhance what I anticipated to be limited options ... was I wrong! The freedom of food choice everywhere I dined delighted me—customized meals were seamless, served with warmth, and I never felt "high maintenance".

The term “wellness” has become mainstream, even trendy; however, for me, it has been a consistent presence in my life. I am an avid fitness enthusiast who has taught different forms of barre for over a decade and am currently teaching at Bar Method. Throughout my trip, it was clear that wellness is naturally woven into everyday life. Seed-to-table food from organic farms and sprawling vineyards nourished my body and fed my soul. For the first time as an adult, my body functioned optimally and effortlessly, as nature intended, without jumping through any hoops or foregoing any pleasures. I felt fresh and light, in rhythm with my environment. I enjoyed organic wine and olive oil yet came home pounds lighter.

My mental stresses and heaviness also lifted considerably. Before I left, Darren urged me to stop and simply be. On game drives, I let my shoulders drop, breathed deeply, and became one with my surroundings. All my senses were heightened: I smelled the wild sage; watched animals in their natural setting; touched papyrus swaying in the breeze; tasted the robust flavors of food directly from the earth; and listened to the meditative whispers of the bush. My perspective shifted, I came back to myself, and my nervous system regulated.

If you suffer from allergies or are as particular about your health and wellness regimes as I am, I recommend you experience southern Africa for yourself.
