Indian Ocean Islands Deconstructed

Who doesn’t love an Instagram vs reality meme? Between AI and editing tools, it’s tough to tell what places actually look like. We can attest, that the islands in the Indian Ocean are not as advertised … they’re better!

Each island is a melting pot of different cultures, yet each exudes a distinct personality. There are crystal clear similitudes among the islands but also nuances that are subtle but important. Our sales team frequents this region often—here are a few of our faves:

Madagascar conjures epic imagery from stately baobab trees and lemurs to white sand beaches and reefs—an untarnished snorkeling and diving paradise. Michael chose a fantasy-level private island off of Madagascar for his honeymoon. Think personal butlers, helicopter views, driftwood sculptures, reeling in massive line fish, and big marine toys.

Mozambique exudes raw romance. Stroll along beaches with sand as fine as talcum powder while looking at mainland Africa across the channel. Think old fishing boats, prolific pansy shells, fresh seafood beach picnics with nobody in sight, and a cold beer at a local joint … Caitlin and I paired Mozambique with the Seychelles for our honeymoon.

The Seychelles personifies intimacy—this string of private islands is the zenith of exclusivity and luxury. Feast on dishes with bold Creole flavors, bicycle around the island’s winding paths, befriend giant tortoises and go deep in elaborate wine cellars. Dance on the beach at sundown while nobody is looking!

The Maldives is an adult playground that encapsulates escapism. Comprised of nearly 2,000 islands, it is imperative to select not only the right island, but property, villa, and pier. My recent trip revealed novel and cutting-edge elements that blend luxury and technology. This archipelago is deservedly ranked as a wellness mecca and its protected marine environment allows coral and elusive whale sharks to thrive.
